Is a Fall Pest Affecting Your Conifers?
How to spot conifer aphids and the signs they may be damaging your pine and spruce trees
How to Spot a Conifer Aphid Problem
Conifer aphids are unusual insects that thrive in cooler fall weather. They feed by piercing the needles and drawing out nutrients, which can damage the needles and create lesions.
These aphids tend to feed on protected foliage farther inside the tree. As older interior needles become damaged, the tree may drop them prematurely. Over time, this can leave the interior thinner and the tree less dense overall.
Look for these signs around your pine trees:
- Excessive needle drop, especially on the interior
- Shiny foliage that glimmers in sunlight
- Wasps flying around the trees
- A blackish residue or appearance on concrete and other surfaces beneath the trees
- Visible small black insects on needles
Try a Simple Check
Place a piece of paper beneath a branch and gently shake it. Look to see whether insects fall onto the paper.
